Eight Bells For Robert (Bob) T. Bennett

Robert (Bob) T. Bennett died at his home in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday December 6, 2014. He was 75 years old.

He was described as a legend, a tireless advocate for Ohio and the best party chairman ever in Ohio. He was elected state GOP chairman in 1988 and over the ensuing 20 years oversaw the party’s dominance of Ohio politics, winning more races than any chairman from either party in Ohio history.

He also was a staunch sailing advocate. He was a member of Edgewater Yacht Club for 48 years. He owned and raced multiple sailboats during this time.  He’s pictured here at the helm of his beloved sailboat “Avalanche”, a 45 Nelson/Marek designed, IOR class racing boat.

Bob encouraged people of all ages to get involved in the sport of sailing. He introduced and helped develop the careers of many young sailors over the years. He was a demanding skipper whose tenaciousness could only be equaled by his generosity and support of the sport.  Three generations of his family are actively involved in racing and cruising sailing.

Bob and his family have supported Edgewater Youth Sailing Foundation for many years. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to this organization.  The foundation is a 501(c)(3) that was created in 2002 to encourage competitive sailing and boat safety at the youth level.
